Welcome To My Crazy Hectic Summer!

My name is Shonna Whitaker and I am from Knoxville, Tennessee. I am finishing up my undergraduate degree in Child and Family Studies this summer, as well as taking Graduate courses for my master in Elementary Education. In the fall I will be student teaching for a 5th grade class at Brickey Elementary, I cannot wait! I have always known that I was going to be a teacher. I love the way that children see the world and I want to have a positive impact on their lives as someone who truly cares. When I was a little girl, I used to go to the teacher supply store and buy stickers, workbooks, and grade-books. I was always playing school and giving the people around me grades for things.
I have had numerous experiences working with children. I began babysitting when I was twelve, and I always volunteered to help with the kids during church functions. In college, I got a job at The Boys and Girls Club Halls/Powell, where I still work at today. I love my job and have so much fun playing games, coloring, and watching Disney movies! I have also taught Sunday School for the 3 and 4 year olds for the last three years at my church. My academic career has also given me several experiences working with children. I began in the ECE department, so I spent two semesters at the Early Learning Center working with a Pre-K and under classes. I visited Head Start for some volunteer hours. I also did a community practicum at the Family Justice Center, which involved families more that children themselves. Last semester I was able to spend some time with a 5th grade class at Beaumont Elementary and a 2nd grade class at Rocky Hill. I loved both of the places, but I think that I will enjoy teaching the older grades more than the younger.
I do not have a lot of free time these days. I am switching jobs from the Boys and Girls Club to 21ST Mortgage due to availability of hours during my internship, I am taking 11 hours this summer in classes, and I just got engaged May 1st.  I plan on getting married November 12 of this year, so I am planning like a mad woman. My best friend just graduated from Maryville this May and is also engaged, so we are brides and maid of honors this summer! When I have down time, I love watching movies and laying in the sun. I also love hanging out with my other best friend, my niece who is seven years old! Welcome to my crazy hectic summer!
